Version 1 worked great on Win98..

  • The free version (Version 1) worked great on Win98 so I decided to upgrade to Version 2. Guess what? It was such a major hassle with the ODBC drivers in relation to the installation of Version 2, search the forums on the subject, look for where to find the drivers, get the right ones installed (unsuccessfully despite several tries), and gasp at the amount of total MBs needed to download all this that I just gave up:hop: . I suppose Version 2 is better off with the new operating systems. I had to upgrade my firewall though so I needed to migrate to a different brand name.

Nevertheless, the support for Outpost has been fantastic during my testing of Version 1 through this forum.:)

  • Sorry about your frustrations with v2. If you ever decide to try again I believe you need MDAC 2.5 and then v 2 will install correctly. I plan to update the thread in the FAQ tonight to reflect that.

  • Great! Thanks for the help. You see, this thread does have a happy ending afterall. You guys are pretty good!

I'll definately be back later. Most likely after I upgrade to a newer operating system.

  • The short answer is: I do not know.

From reading the voluminous information about MDAC and ODBC drivers, I do know this: Microsoft stopped combining MDAC & ODBC drivers in a single install package following their release of MDAC ver. 2.5. That means that when OP2 asks you to install MDAC 2.7 in order to obtain ODBC driver ver. 3, it's asking you to install a package the does NOT contain the required ODBC driver!

Empirical evidence indicates that since MDAC 2.8, 2.7, JetPack4, & FoxPro ODBC drivers do not facilitate the installation of OP2 on Win98; and MDAC 2.5 does, this version of MDAC is the correct version to have when installing OP2 on Win98.

As far as the security issue is concerned, again, I do not know. But, that (security) is one of the reasons I have Outpost v2.

I hope this helps, good luck,

    John

  • Culpeper,

Instructions on rolling back MDAC installations can be found here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnmdac/html/datechartoverview.asp)

  • John,

Not to worry. Your spelling is fine and with the insane number of acronyms floating around these days I'm surprised that there aren't many more mistakes made. Just want to say thank you for sharing your discovery with us. Hopefully it will help many more people resolve a frustrating issue.

BTW OCDB is really a valid acronym it stands for Overclockers Database Network (http://www.ocdb.net).

I installed MDAC 2.8 and the latest Jet package as well. Still no go on the Version 2 install. Kept telling me it couldn't find the ODBC drivers even though the MDAC and Jet installs were fine.

  • ODBC is the correct acroynym and I will change the title of his thread to reflect that. As far as uninstalling MDAC components I will see if I can find instructions on how to do that.

  • Sorry about the incorrect typing of the acronym ODBC. I was in a bit of a hurry to get my information out because it seems that a lot of people are having the same problem I had with Windows 98 and OP v2.

MegaHertz, thanks for changing the thread title.

I did not do anything about rolling back the MDAC installs that I did prior to installing MDAC 2.5. While doing the various installs it seemed that the installation program itself deleted and added the necessary files for each version of MDAC I was installing.

Good luck, and I'll be more careful about my spelling in the future.

  • Is there an difference between 98 and 98SE ?

Not sure if I installed with MDAC 2.6 or 2.7 (On 98SE) - I know I had a component issue that caused all logs to show as SYSTEM until I updated - and I'm now running 2.8 and the latest JET (4.0SP7).

Maybe a certain progression is required - Perhaps 2.5 installs a required file for 98 that is missing from later versions?

I believe MDAC 2.8 also constitutes a security patch as well, so being locked to an older version would be bad!

  • Culpeper,

Please have a look at this thread (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8341). It may or may not relate to you, but I believe it might.

  • That looks like the problem I was having. I thought that was what you were trying to say in your first post. MDAC 2.5 is the one I needed. Subsequent versions of MDAC are a problem for OP Version 2 on Win98. That is sort of odd but than again we're talking about Microsoft Win98.

That thread didn't come up in my searches because JoeyParrott is spelling it "OCBD" and not "ODBC" Now, I don't know which acroynym is correct.

Oh well, my loss too. Incidentally, would I need to uninstall MDAC 2.8 before installing MDAC 2.5? If so, which friggin program is it in the add/delete program section of the control panel in Win98? I can't figure out how to uninstall MDAC 2.8.
